When new fertility care patients walk through our doors, our first priority is sitting down with them to figure out their options. Every patient has unique goals, experiences, and needs, so we make sure to walk through their treatment options together.
One of the options we discuss, depending on where the patient is in their fertility journey, is minimally invasive reproductive surgery. At our facility, we have developed advanced technological techniques that offer surgery-seeking patients specific advantages. What are the benefits of minimally invasive reproductive surgery?
Which Advanced Techniques Do We Use for Reproductive Surgery?
The surgeries we perform include advanced endometriosis surgery, fibroid surgery, and tubal and fertility reconstructive surgery. We make sure to focus on limiting postoperative pain resulting from each of the procedures we offer, an approach that often leads to outpatient surgery for processes that traditionally have been done through major operations and big incisions.
Traditional methods lead to patients spending a long time in the hospital. So instead, our approach is to use techniques to minimize postoperative pain. For example, endometriosis patients often come to our office with severe pelvic pain and painful periods. This pain restricts them tremendously, some patients losing years of life due to their symptoms. Thanks to our advanced techniques to treat endometriosis, their lives are transformed after surgery.
What Are Robotic and Laparoscopic Minimally Invasive Surgery Techniques?
Robotics is a surgical tool that allows us to have instruments that bend within the surgical field, granting our surgeons additional mobility to achieve results that were previously unattainable.
- For endometriosis surgery, our excision technique is unique in the gynecologist community.
- For fibroid surgery, we aim to remove the fibroids from the uterus, which is a procedure called a myomectomy. In the past, this was an open surgery with a two-day postoperative hospital stay. Now, we can perform this procedure laparoscopically, meaning minimally invasive, allowing patients to return to work within three to seven days as opposed to the four to six weeks that was common before laparoscopic surgery was possible.
- For tubal surgery, laparoscopic solutions provide enormous benefits to patients. Tubal surgery commonly involves tubal reversal, when the patient has had their tubes tied before deciding to reverse the process to have a pregnancy. Traditionally, this was done as an open surgery with a big operating microscope in order to magnify the tube and use tiny sutures, smaller than human hair. Now, we can perform tubal anastomosis laparoscopically with the same very fine sutures at a nearly 100% success rate leading to pregnancy after this procedure.
Another advantage to a laparoscopic approach is that it can be performed at an outpatient surgery center at a much lower cost than you might get in a hospital setting.
